Edmonton Oilers vs Columbus Blue Jackets

The NHL is approaching the end of the regular season, with only some five to eight games left per team. There are still a couple of playoff-berths up for grabs in both conferences and Columbus Blue Jackets is one of the teams still in the midst of the battle. Edmonton Oilers, on the other hand, are not.

Oilers’ season has been an utter disaster in many ways. The moves made during the past season have not worked out and what was the upcoming dark horse of the western conference seems to have headed right back where they started – despite Conor McDavid’s push for second consecutive Art Ross trophy as the leading scorer of the league. It never ceases to amaze how the team can succumb to such mediocrity with such a talent at hand, but Oilers have made it an art form. Oilers lost their chance to make the playoffs – in practice – at least a month ago and instantly improved somewhat, but it was already too late. They’ve collected 74 points in 76 games, but are now 6-2-2 from their last 10 – when it doesn’t matter anymore.

Accuscore’s NHL Side Value record in all Edmonton Oilers games is 46-30 with a fantastic profit of +1752 for the season and NHL Side Value record in all Columbus Blue Jackets games is a magnificent 48-28 with a hefty profit of +1471. Columbus Blue Jackets are at the heart of the Eastern conference playoff-battle and are currently 3rd in the Metropolitan division, sixth in all of east. Their divisional rivals Flyers have the same amount of points, 89 in 76 games and the same ROW of 36 as well. The duo is chased by divisional rival Devils by three points and a game in hand and another wild card hopeful Florida Panthers by four points and two games in hand. Needless to say every point is crucial from the last six games and in reality the playoffs have already started for the Blue Jackets. They have definitely showed up when it matters and are currently the hottest team in the league with 9-1-0 record from last 10 games, albeit losing their last game a couple of days ago to another playoff-hopeful St. Louis Blues.

Accuscore’s simulations

In Accuscore simulations the Columbus Blue Jackets are clear favorites on the road. They win 63.9% of the simulations, leaving the hosts Edmonton Oilers with 36.1%. While to odds indicate Columbus to be the favorite as well, there’s some value still in the away win: odds on offer hover around 58% for Blue Jackets ML.

Even if Columbus hasn’t been the heavy scoring team we have seen some other years, they’re likely to put the puck past Oilers keeper Cam Talbot on average 3.0 times. This’ll do for the W, since the hosts only score on average 2.3 times against Sergei Bobrovski.

The most likely scorer comes from the home team, as the league leader Connor McDavid has 61.3% chance to score at least one point in the game. The same wonderkid is the most likely to score a goal for the home team as well, with 31.9%. Not too much support there for McDavid, as Leon Draisatl scores a point with 48.5% and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with 39%.

For the visitors, the scoring effort is divided with a much wider group. The leader in percentages is Artemi Panarin, who scores a point with 52% and a goal with 27.4% probability. He’s supported by Cam Atkinson, with a point scoring probability of 47.3% and goal scoring likelihood 31.9%. All-around defensemen Zach Werenski and Seth Jones post in similar percentages, with 41.5% probability for scoring at least one point and 14% to score a goal.

Analyst Picks

If the game was played early on the season, we’d probably have a completely different idea of the result. But since it’s now and we’re pushing for the playoffs, there’s no other option than to take motivated Columbus over the just-for-fun-playing underachieving Oilers. The player props look tasty as well!

  • Columbus ML win should be played with odds of -177 | 1.57
  • 3-way bet for away win is risky, but worth a shot with odds of -112 | 1.89
  • The goal total stays UNDER 5.5 in 58.6% of the simulations, so take the under with -141 | 1.71
  • Goals & Points:
    • To score a goal: Conor McDavid, Cam Atkinson odds of +214| 3.14
    • To score a point: Artemi Panarin, Cam Atkinson, odds of +113 | 2.13
    • To score a point Seth Jones, Zach Werenski: odds of +141| 2.41
    • McDavid to score a point: odds of -158 | 1.63
