Kansas City Chiefs Season Preview
The Chiefs had 2,627 rushing yards in 2010, best in the Nation Football League. However, the Chiefs passing attack ranked 30th in the league. This imbalance combined with a 2-4 record in the division led to an 10-6 finish for the Chiefs. Last season, 10-6 was good enough to win the AFC West, but the Chargers and Raiders were close behind.

This season the Chiefs were dealt a harsh schedule which includes away games at Indianapolis, at New England, at Chicago, and at the New York Jets. With Green Bay also coming to Kansas City in late December, the Chiefs chances of repeating as AFC West Champions dropped to 8 percent. The Chiefs’ chances of returning to the post-season were projected at 20 percent.

Despite the pessimistic projection, the Chiefs have the ability to surprise. Jamaal Charles averaged 6.4 yards/carry and led the Chiefs with 1,467 rushing yards last season. It’s no wonder the Chiefs were the best rushing offense in the league. Despite the 30th ranked passing attack in terms of yards from scrimmage, quarterback Matt Cassel put together the best season of his career in terms of TDs. Cassel put up a career-high 27 TDs and only threw 7 INTs in 2010, his lowest interception total since becoming a starter in the NFL. With a strong running game and an efficient passing game, the Chiefs have the schedule and ability to cause some major upsets, but don’t expect them to return to the playoffs.
